Whether you call it American Chop Suey, Goulash, or Chili Mac, I know that you’ll be calling it your new favorite meal! Sweet heavens, it is SO delicious – everything I remembered from my childhood, but even better! From the slightly sweet, slow-simmered pasta sauce to the wonderfully-tender spiced beef, onions + peppers, all tossed with a generous portion of pasta, it is pure comfort food. So, I hunted down a recipe for a slightly-fancied-up version, + got cookin’. It was, hands-down, my favorite comfort food growing up + even though I haven’t eaten it since I was a teen, I found myself seriously craving it recently. So, what is it? Basically, it’s ground beef, onions, + peppers, sauteed with spices, tossed with macaroni + a slow-simmered tomato sauce. But as I learned from my facebook followers, in other regions it’s called American Goulash (or just Goulash), Chili Mac, or Hamburger Mac, to name a few. Growing up in New England, we called it American Chop Suey. While this simple comfort food dish is popular throughout the United States, it goes by different names in different regions. First, if you’re thinking, “what the heck is American Chop Suey?!,” allow me to explain. I actually just dug up my copy from the bookshelf. It is a collection of short stories from the Showa period (1926-1989). However, I think that the one that stood out the most for me was a book called The Showa Anthology. Apart from those, I can’t really say much about Japanese literature, and I can’t even remember much of the ones that I read. And of course some Osamu Dazai and Abe Kobo, as you do. Some ten years ago, when in Japan, I went through the basic Japanese historical canon plus selected bits of some contemporary writers like Haruki Murakami and the (somewhat less contemporary) children’s author Kenji Miyazawa. Nothing’s outside of the scope of this site (although I do keep the right to moderate discussions), so go ahead. Any recommendations or comments?įinally, it would be nice to have a space to discuss Japanese literature…or is that outside the scope of this site? You just never know where fans are lurking!įinally, it would be nice to have a space to discuss Japanese literature…or is that outside the scope of this site? I’ve read a fair amount of Kawabata, and am beginning on Mishima. So, I sat down and ordered a glass of wine before heading to the gym (probably not the brightest idea, but there you have it) and read some passages from “Akira Kurosawa Interviews” which was noted by my server, and we started a long conversation on Japanese cinema. After work, I went to the restaurant across the street that has dragged out some tables and chairs and made a little streetside cafe area. Who knows? People may actually become interested in learning about the golden age of Japanese cinema! They may discover Ozu, Mizoguchi, Kobayashi, Inagaki, Naruse, Kurosawa! Oh, a funny thing happened last night. I hope that the Americans are able to make some friends with Japanese and that we learn about these friendships. Hegemony in the world, we need to learn about the rest of the people on this planet! So, yay for that. And, that’s going to be amazing! American culture is so insular, so uninterested in anything outside our borders, so oblivious to the world, that this is a good thing, as silly as it may initially seem.Īnd, anyway, since the death of the U.S. Here’s what I think will happen: I think that Americans will get a chance to see Japanese people (even in this ridiculous context) as real. Oh, man, I dunno-it’s just all so whack that all these things are happening at the same time-my discovery of this site, the conversations about Kurosawa, reading the TOHO posts, thinking about Japanese culture. I saw the “Seven Samurai” mural that featured in a post elsewhere on this site, and the saga of Jeremy’s attempt to locate the studios when he was in Tokyo. It featured Americans who thought they were filming a reality show, who were flown to Japan, then marched up to a sound stage at TOHO!!!!! Champagne was sprayed, and music was turned up to the threshold of feeling. The Rangers briefly bounced around behind the mound afterward, hugging and shaking hands, before heading for the clubhouse, where restraint went to die. The lingering unknown in Phoenix made for a muted on-field celebration. Until then that day comes, I’m sticking with the innovative program that makes it so easy to create and perform live: I’m sticking with Mainstage.Image by Akai Professional Available at: Sweetwater Amazon Or perhaps it’s competitors will overtake Mainstage, turning it into a relic of the past. Perhaps the rise of these new competitors will force Apple to do what it does best when faced with competition: step up the game, innovate, and create something even more remarkable. To be honest, Mainstage 1.0 wasn't that great, either. While I don't think either Native Instruments or Akai got it right the first time around, that doesn't mean they won't eventually create something amazing. There has been a huge need for robust performance software for keyboardists for quite some time, and until now Apple’s Mainstage has been virtually the only option. I’m happy that their are competitors to Mainstage starting to surface. In the past Akai has often struggled with user interfaces ( MPC 2000, anyone?), and I wouldn’t be surprised if this software system is somehow “locked” to their Advance keyboards, or loses most of the advantages when switched with another keyboard. While everything Native Instruments make is top-notch, there are still third party plugins I use, and keeping me from using them live is a deal-breaker for a professional that needs the best sounds.Īkai’s software appears to be more flexible, but I doubt that by itself it will be an improvement on Mainstage. While it looks like Akai’s system will host 3rd party plugins, Native Instruments only tightly integrates with NI’s software plugins. Switching to one of Mainstage’s alternatives would make me have to haul my keyboard on flights and tour buses every show I play. Switching out keyboards might not be an issue to some, but I often need to control Mainstage with both a 88 note hammer action keyboard and my trusty 61 key midi controller, and I don’t want to lose functionality just because a switch instruments.Īlso, I am increasingly moving from venue to venue for shows, using whatever midi controller they have available. If you go with another keyboard (it’s not clear yet if Akai’s VIP software will even work without their keyboard), you lose any advantage that the software/hardware integration offers. But Apple continues to upgrade their built-in synths, and sonic aficionados as wide ranging as Lady Gaga and Nine Inch Nails opening admit to using Mainstage’s software VSTs both live and in the studio.īoth Akai and Native Instruments’ virtual instrument platform are only truly effective with the integrated keyboard they sell, meaning if you want to take advantage of all the additional features they offer, you’ll have to stick with the integrated keyboard. If Mainstage’s plugins were sub-par, I’d have a harder argument to make. You have to purchase plugins separately with both Akai (you have to buy 3rd party samples unless you stick with the limited free plugins) or buy Native Instrument only plugins with their offering (I dropped $500 for my Komplete plugin suite). Mainstage comes with 10+ gigabytes of amazing plugins and samples. But even when bundling an expensive controller like Novation’s feature laden Remote SL MKII with Mainstage, you’d still walk away with an extra $70 in your pocket.Īnd the price point only drops (or goes up) from here. Many would argue that you get a keyboard with both Akai and NI’s offerings, which is a fair point. Here are the 3 reasons I think neither Akai or Native Instruments got it right with their first challenge to Mainstage:Īt $599 for even the basic version of each setup, both Akai and Native Instruments make Mainstage look like the steal that it is at under $30. While I’m grateful that there are now competitors to Mainstage, there are several reasons I believe Mainstage is still the best live performance software on the market. With Mainstage gaining some significant competitors this year at winter NAMM, many people have been asking what I think of Native Instrument’s Komplete Kontrol, and Akai’s Advance Keyboard line. Okay, I go into the studio, I locked the door, and I want to build a record. He went on: "When I made the GASH record, it was a committee of one. And what does the producer say the producer is always saying, 'Now, here, listen, let's try this', and then you've got the record company that just says, 'No, not that song,' and so many suggestions." So, even songs I wrote, there's a committee that has an involvement in it: 'What is the band feel? The singer, where is he going to fit. Like, even with a song like 'Knucklebones' I didn't write it, Greg came in with that. Steve said: "I had a fight at times - not 'fight', but I had to argue hard for doubling a guitar part. Talk of the album arose when Vai discussed the VAI / GASH album (recorded in 1991),and how it differed to his experiences in the studio on the two Roth albums. It marked Roth's first time in the producer's chair, along with Vai. "Skyscraper", Roth's second full-length album since leaving VAN HALEN in 1985, saw the flamboyant frontman experimenting with at-the-time more contemporary sounds than his straight-ahead rock debut, 1985's "Eat 'Em and Smile". Vai made his comments while promoting the VAI / GASH album, which has just been released through Mascot Label. Recalling how both he and Roth, who both co-produced the album were "really forensic" but lacked the experience of being rock music producers, the guitarist also revealed that the guitar solos on the 1988 set came mostly from the demos, as Roth "liked them so much". This second and unfortunately last testimony with this formation is obviously an essential of the hard rock and represents certainly the summit of the solo career of David Lee Roth.Steve Vai has spoken about the recording of David Lee Roth's "Skyscraper" album in a new interview with Eonmusic. Excellent springboard for the musicians who took part in its elaboration, Billy Sheehan will set up thereafter his own group Mr Big and Steve Vai will launch out in a solo adventure of which we know the success. With its technical qualities and its instrumental demonstrations, "Skyscraper" will be considered as more experimental than its predecessor. At this game, we could easily quote all the titles, either for their technically amazing musical content, or for the fabulous show proposed by Diamond Dave. The climax is the hallucinating 'Hot Dog And A Shake', pretext to a dizzying solo of Steve Vai that nothing seems to be able to stop and on which David Lee Roth offers brilliant vocal deliriums sticking perfectly to the ambient musical madness.īut for the general public, the album will remain especially engraved in the memories for the mega-tube 'Just Like Paradise' with the chorus that all the readers who crossed the years 1980 must have hummed at least once in their life! For the same reasons, we will quote the semi-acoustic 'Damn Good' with its country flavour, in which the warm choice of Diamond Dave will bewitch you. In this respect, "Skyscraper" is a little more marked by the performances of Steve Vai who, in addition to taking care of the musical part of the compositions, is credited with the production of the album, thus letting augur what will be his future solo testimony, "Passion & Warfare".Įach title of "Skycraper" is thus the pretext to place breathtaking plans filled with technicality to which his mates of play, and in particular Billy Sheehan, come to mix with a hallucinating mastery (the solo of "Bottom Lines"). "Skyscraper" begins with the frantic "Knucklebones" in which the couple Diamond Dave/Steve Vai takes the recipes of the success of the previous opus but pushed to the paroxysm of the capacities of each of the two stars. As a reminder, the band includes Gregg Bissonnette on drums, Billy Sheehan on bass and most importantly, six-string genius Steve Vai. Two years after "Eat'Em And Smile", which was acclaimed by the public and the media, the fantastic frontman David Lee Roth returns with his dream band to give us again a lot of pleasure. That includes large-format batteries that power heavy equipment, buses and provide grid-scale energy storage. r Electrovaya has also demonstrated its ability to implement ceramic separators at scale as to it has already been used in thousands of the company’s infinity batteries, high-powered lithium-ion batteries with one of the longest-lasting designs in the industry. The Company’s proprietary woven ceramic separator technology improves flexibility, one of the key drawbacks of using ceramic, while still boasting high heat resistance and longevity. Those preliminary results are a promising sign that the technology can meet the 800 cycles with 80% capacity retention target for a battery to be used in an electric vehicle. In the latest study results of the proprietary hybrid battery, coin cell samples reached 300 cycles with 94% capacity retention. Electrovaya’s Solid State Battery Features Unique Attributes Already Used in Its Commercial Lithium-Ion BatteryĮlectrovaya’s hybrid lithium metal battery features a lithium metal anode with a ceramic separator and a solid composite electrolyte. Here’s how it compares to some of the other leading solid-state platforms in development. Electrovaya Inc.(OTCQB: EFLVF), already one of the industry’s leaders with its safe, long-lasting lithium-ion battery, is optimistic that its innovative hybrid solid-state battery prototype is moving closer to commercialization. With multiple companies at the forefront of this emerging technology, the key challenges have been developing a design that’s easy to manufacture at scale and functional in the larger format batteries needed for vehicles and storage systems. That’s why the race is on to develop the market’s first solid-state battery - one that uses a solid electrolyte in place of the liquid or gel found in lithium-ion batteries. Manufacturers are struggling to increase energy capacity without increasing the weight or cost of the battery. The analyst also has a buy rating with a $5 price target. As energy capacity needs grow, lithium-ion batteries - the best battery technology currently available - are rapidly approaching their limits. “The potential advantages of solid state battery technology over current Lithium-ion battery technology are readily apparent,” he said. Granted, you can’t drive a solid-state battery EV just yet, but major automakers are ready to test them. Down the road, this potential alternative to lithium-ion batteries could help improve vehicle range, speed up charging times, and cut the risk of a potential fire. The liquid electrolyte solution in conventional batteries is compressed into a solid, hence the name, solid-state. Solid-state batteries could be the key to making our phones sustain power for days… enabling our smartwatches to fully charge in seconds… and, yes, allowing electric cars to drive for thousands of miles without needing to recharge.” “…they represent one of the most promising technological breakthroughs on the 2020s.
